MMI System Guide
MMI 3G+ is the upgraded version of Audi's third-generation infotainment system, distinguished by its touchpad controller. This guide explains how to identify it and how our CarPlay retrofit integrates with it.
MMI 3G+ looks similar to MMI 3G at first glance, but there is one key difference: the rotary controller dial has a touchpad surface on top. This touchpad lets you write letters by hand for navigation destination entry. Here is how to confirm you have MMI 3G+:
If your dial is plain with no touchpad, you have MMI 3G, not 3G+. See our MMI 3G guide instead.
Although MMI 3G and MMI 3G+ look similar, the harness connector and DIP switch configuration differ between them. Ordering a kit configured for MMI 3G when you have MMI 3G+ (or vice versa) means the CarPlay module will not interface correctly with the factory system.
This is why we verify your MMI system before dispatch. When you order, enter your model and year, and select "Specialist confirmation" for the MMI field if you are unsure. We will confirm whether you have MMI 3G or 3G+ and configure the kit accordingly.
CarPlay renders on the same factory MMI 3G+ display. The larger screen size works well with the CarPlay interface.
The touchpad, rotary dial and softkeys continue to work with the factory MMI. You navigate CarPlay using the same controller.
Pair once over Bluetooth. CarPlay or Android Auto connects automatically every drive — no cables after the initial setup.
Music, calls and navigation audio route through the factory sound system, including Bang & Olufsen where fitted.
MMI 3G+ was fitted to a narrower range of vehicles than MMI 3G. These are the only verified models in our supplier compatibility database.

MMI 3G+ adds a touchpad surface to the rotary controller dial, allowing you to write letters by hand for destination entry. MMI 3G+ also typically has a larger screen and a slightly different menu structure. The harness connection and DIP switch configuration differ between the two, so identifying the correct system matters for ordering the right kit.
Look at the rotary controller on the centre console. If the top of the dial has a flat touchpad surface (where you can draw letters), you have MMI 3G+. If the dial is plain with no touchpad, you have MMI 3G. MMI 3G+ is typically found in the Audi A6 and A7 from 2016–2018.
MMI 3G+ was fitted to the Audi A6 (2016–2018) and Audi A7 (2016–2018). These are the only verified models in our supplier compatibility database. If your vehicle is outside these years, you may have a different MMI system.
Yes. The MMI 3G+ touchpad, rotary controller and all softkeys continue to work with the factory MMI. The CarPlay module integrates alongside the factory system — nothing is replaced.
Yes. The reverse camera and parking sensors continue to appear on the factory screen when you shift into reverse. CarPlay does not interfere with the camera feed on MMI 3G+ vehicles.
The physical installation process is similar — radio removal keys, inline harness connection — but the DIP switch configuration and the exact harness connector differ between MMI 3G and MMI 3G+. We confirm the correct configuration for your MMI 3G+ before dispatch.
