BMW F30 3 Series CarPlay Upgrade (2012–2019): CIC, NBT and NBT EVO

The F30-generation 3 Series (sedan F30, Touring F31, Gran Turismo F34) is one of the most popular BMWs in Australia, and one of the best candidates for a CarPlay retrofit. The main thing to know is that the iDrive system changed during its production run.
The F30 used three iDrive systems
Across its run, the F30 family used CIC on early cars, then NBT, then NBT EVO on later cars. The changeover dates vary by build and market, so we confirm yours from the menu or a photo rather than the year alone.
| System | Typical era | How it usually looks |
|---|---|---|
| CCC | ≈ 2003–2008 | Early iDrive with a central menu you move up, down, left and right through. |
| CIC | ≈ 2008–2012/13 | Vertical list menu (CD/Multimedia, Radio, Telephone, Navigation), sharper screen. |
| NBT | from 2012 | Updated vertical menu, often with ConnectedDrive; touchpad controller on some cars. |
| NBT EVO | from 2016 | ID4 looks like NBT; ID5/ID6 use the horizontal tile layout. |

Does it work on the F31 Touring and F34 Gran Turismo?
They share the same iDrive generations as the F30 sedan, so they are assessed the same way — by iDrive system, screen and options fitted.
