Does CarPlay Work with Audi BOSE and Bang & Olufsen Audio? What You Need to Know

A question we get often: does CarPlay work with Audi BOSE or Bang & Olufsen audio? The honest answer is yes — CarPlay routes audio through the factory system, so your BOSE or B&O speakers are the ones playing the sound. But "works" and "sounds perfect with zero adjustment" are not the same thing, and depending on your car and the source you are playing, you may need to adjust EQ and levels to get it sounding the way you want. This guide is deliberately honest about that.
How CarPlay audio routes through BOSE / B&O
Our CarPlay kit connects to the factory MMI control unit, and the MMI handles audio routing to the factory amplifier and speakers. That means CarPlay audio goes through the exact same path as factory radio, CD, or AMI input — through the factory amplifier and out of your BOSE or Bang & Olufsen speakers. The kit does not bypass or replace the factory audio system; it adds CarPlay as another input source alongside the existing ones.
The honest bit: EQ and level tuning
Here is the part that is worth being honest about. Because CarPlay is a new input source, it may not arrive perfectly matched to the EQ and level settings your factory system was tuned for. In practice, some owners find CarPlay audio sounds thinner, quieter, or slightly different to factory sources when first connected — particularly on B&O systems, which are tuned more precisely from the factory. This is not a fault of the kit or the car; it is the nature of adding a new input source to a tuned audio system.
The fix is adjustment, not replacement. The MMI's tone controls (bass, treble, balance, fader) and any BOSE / B&O-specific sound settings are still fully accessible, and a small amount of tuning usually gets CarPlay sounding the way you want. On some cars you may also want to nudge the iPhone's own volume or the app's EQ (Spotify and Apple Music both have built-in EQ options). This is normal and expected — it is the same thing you would do adding any new source to a tuned system.
Why the source matters
Different sources sound different even on the same system. A high-quality streaming tier through CarPlay will sound fuller than a highly compressed stream, and a locally stored lossless file will sound different again. If CarPlay sounds "thin" at first, check what the app is actually streaming at — the source quality is often the variable, not the kit. Switching between a few sources (Spotify high quality, Apple Music lossless, a podcast) tells you whether the tuning or the source is the thing to adjust.
How to tune it
A sensible order, if CarPlay does not sound right at first:
- Press MEDIA and make sure CarPlay is the active source.
- Check the MMI tone controls — bass, treble, balance, fader — and nudge them to taste. These affect CarPlay just as they affect factory sources.
- Check any BOSE / B&O-specific sound settings in the MMI (surround, sound profile, etc.) and try the options available.
- Check the iPhone volume and the app's own EQ (Spotify and Apple Music both have EQ settings).
- Try a different source quality in the app to rule out compression as the variable.
In most cases a few minutes of this gets CarPlay sounding right. If you have tried all of the above and it still sounds off, contact support — we can talk through the specifics of your car and system.
What stays working
- Factory radio, CD, and AMI input — all still work as before.
- BOSE / B&O sound profiles and settings — all still accessible.
- Steering wheel volume and skip controls — work with CarPlay as they do with factory sources.
- Navigation voice prompts — route through the same audio path.
Frequently asked questions
Does CarPlay work with Audi BOSE or Bang & Olufsen?
Yes — CarPlay routes through the factory audio system, so your BOSE or B&O speakers play the sound. The kit adds CarPlay as an input source; it does not bypass the factory amp or speakers.
Why does CarPlay sound thinner or quieter than factory radio?
Because CarPlay is a new input source, it may not be perfectly matched to the factory EQ and levels at first. A small amount of tuning (MMI tone controls, B&O/BOSE settings, app EQ) usually gets it sounding right.
Is thin or crackling sound a fault with the kit?
Not usually — it is more often a tuning or source-quality issue. If you have tuned and tried different sources and it still sounds off, contact support and we will talk through your specific car.
Do I lose my BOSE / B&O sound settings?
No — all factory sound profiles and settings remain fully accessible in the MMI.
Does the kit change the factory audio system?
No. It connects to the MMI control unit and adds CarPlay as an input. The factory amplifier, speakers, and tuning are untouched.
