CarPlay Installation Handover: 15 Checks Before You Finish
A CarPlay home screen is a starting point, not the complete handover. Before an installation is finished, test the original vehicle functions and the new phone features in a repeatable order. This checklist is for functional acceptance; it does not replace the vehicle-specific installation instructions.
Record the factory baseline before work starts
Check the original display, radio, sound, Bluetooth, vehicle menus, camera and parking sensors before fitting hardware. Note any existing faults with the owner. A baseline makes later diagnosis much fairer and more precise than trying to remember whether a feature used to work.
Agree which factory features and new functions the proposed kit is intended to support. An interface should not be accepted on the assumption that every factory option is automatically retained.
The 15-point functional checklist
- The factory system starts and its normal menus remain accessible.
- The documented control switches into CarPlay and back to the factory interface.
- The intended phone pairs through the documented wired or wireless method.
- CarPlay or Android Auto launches and responds to its supported controls.
- Music is audible through the selected original source or approved audio route.
- Left/right balance and normal listening level behave as expected.
- An outgoing call works in both directions.
- An incoming call can be answered and ended using the supported controls.
- A voice command uses the intended microphone and produces an audible response.
- Navigation prompts can be heard in the agreed listening configuration.
- The original radio remains usable after switching back.
- The factory or added reverse camera switches correctly, where included.
- Parking sensor sound and display behave as agreed, where fitted.
- A normal shutdown and later restart reconnect as documented after the vehicle has settled.
- Trim, USB access and cable placement are checked, with no cable trapped or exposed to moving parts.
Keep a simple pass, fail or not-applicable record
For each check, record the expected behaviour and the result. Use “not applicable” for equipment the vehicle does not have. Include phone model, operating system, interface model and firmware where known. This is enough to reproduce a problem without collecting unrelated personal information.
A short stationary video can show the source selection, control used and resulting screen. Audio problems also need a description of what each person heard. Do not ask somebody to handle a phone or test menus while driving.
Leave the owner with the exact operating sequence
Explain the factory-to-retrofit switching control, the selected audio source, microphone route, USB location and method for choosing another phone. Have the owner repeat those steps once while parked. A written note is more useful than “it should just connect”.
If a check fails, record it and resolve the cause with the installer or supplier. Do not complete the handover by calling a partially working system finished, or change unrelated coding and firmware in the hope of hiding the symptom.
Questions owners ask
Is a successful startup video enough to prove every feature works?
No. Display startup, sound, calling, switching, camera integration and reconnection are separate checks. Record the features agreed for that specific installation.
Must I remove all trim again to run this checklist?
Many functional checks can be done while safely parked without dismantling the car. Physical inspection should follow the vehicle-specific procedure and be completed by a suitably competent installer.
